Why Everyone Aged 65 and Over Should Have Their Flu Vaccination
Protect yourself this winter with your free NHS flu vaccination.
As we get older, our immune system naturally becomes weaker, making it harder to fight off infections such as flu. For people aged 65 and over, flu can be much more serious than a bad cold and can lead to complications including chest infections, pneumonia, hospital admission, and in some cases, life-threatening illness.
Benefits of the Flu Vaccination
✅ Reduces your risk of catching flu
✅ Helps prevent serious complications and hospitalisation
✅ Protects those around you, including grandchildren, friends, and vulnerable family members
✅ Helps you stay independent and well throughout the winter months
✅ Reduces pressure on NHS services during the busy winter season
Why is flu more serious for older adults?
People aged 65 and over are at increased risk of developing complications from flu, especially if they have long-term health conditions such as:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Asthma or other lung conditions
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Neurological conditions
Even healthy older adults can become seriously unwell from flu.
The vaccine is safe and effective
The flu vaccine is offered free of charge by the NHS every year because the flu virus changes each season. The vaccine is updated annually to provide the best possible protection against the strains most likely to circulate.
Book your vaccination
If you are aged 65 or over, we strongly encourage you to have your flu vaccination as soon as you are invited. Protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community this winter.
Contact the surgery to book your appointment or speak to a member of our team if you have any questions.
When should I NOT have my flu vaccination?
Most people can have the flu vaccine safely. However, you should contact the surgery before your appointment or postpone your vaccination if
- You are feeling unwell on the day of your appointment, especially if you have a high temperature (fever).
- You have a new infection and are feeling significantly unwell.
- You have previously had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a flu vaccine or any of its ingredients. Please discuss this with the surgery first.
Please note the phone lines are not open on the Saturday Flu Clinics.
