Adult Flu Vaccination Advice for Age Under 65

Flu Vaccination for Adults Under 65 at Increased Risk

Protect yourself this winter with a free NHS flu vaccination if you are eligible.

Flu is a highly infectious virus that can make you seriously unwell. While many people recover within a week or two, those with certain health conditions are at greater risk of developing complications such as pneumonia, worsening of existing conditions, hospital admission, and serious illness.
Why should I have the flu vaccine?
✅ Reduces your risk of catching flu
✅ Helps prevent serious complications and hospitalisation
✅ Protects your family, friends, and vulnerable people around you
✅ Helps keep long-term health conditions stable
✅ Reduces time off work and disruption to daily life
Who is eligible for a free NHS flu vaccination?
You may be eligible if you are under 65 and have a long-term health condition, including:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Diabetes
  • Neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis
  • A weakened immune system due to illness or treatment
  • Severe obesity (BMI of 40 or above)

You may also be eligible if you are:

  • Pregnant
  • A carer
  • Living with someone who has a weakened immune system
  • A frontline health or social care worker

Why is vaccination important if I have a long-term condition?
Flu can put extra strain on your body and may worsen existing health conditions. Even if your condition is well controlled, flu can lead to serious complications that may require hospital treatment.
Is the vaccine safe?
Yes. The flu vaccine has an excellent safety record and is given to millions of people every year. As flu viruses change each season, a new vaccination is required every year to provide the best protection.
When should I delay my appointment?
If you are feeling significantly unwell or have a high temperature on the day of your vaccination, please contact the surgery for advice. A mild cold without a fever is not usually a reason to postpone your appointment.
